Demolition permits and asbestos in Murfreesboro

Demolition in the city goes through the Building and Codes Department, 2nd floor of City Hall at 111 West Vine Street, 615-893-3750. The application needs a site sketch and a letter saying how the debris will be removed and where it will be disposed of, which is where our name goes. Published fees from 1 June 2026 are $100 to demolish a one- or two-family dwelling, half the building-permit fee (minimum $100) for other structures, a $500 refundable final-inspection deposit and a 3% technology fee; work before the permit is issued doubles the fee. Inside the East Main Street Historic Zone (H-1) the Historic Zoning Commission has to issue a Certificate of Appropriateness before a demolition permit.

Tennessee also requires an asbestos notification to TDEC ten working days before any demolition, whether or not asbestos is present, and before renovations that disturb more than 260 linear feet, 160 square feet or 35 cubic feet of suspect material, with an accredited inspection first. Friable asbestos never goes in a roll-off; it is special waste handled by a licensed abatement contractor.

Where construction debris goes

Our construction and demolition loads go to the Rutherford County Transfer Station at 6025 Landfill Road (which takes C&D but not concrete slabs, tires, drums or asbestos) or to Middle Point Landfill on East Jefferson Pike, which accepts C&D. The county landfill itself has taken no C&D since 2018 and the fourteen county convenience centers refuse construction debris outright, so a roll-off is the practical route for any real quantity. The City of Murfreesboro’s own collection will not remove building debris either (Code § 14-14).
